How Conscious Living Works

Conscious Living started as a simple idea: to make sustainable shopping easier. What began as bookmarking eco-conscious brands on social media quickly evolved into a full-fledged research project. Our founder started collecting brand data in spreadsheets—comparing ingredients, packaging, nutrition, and ethical practices.

Hundreds of brands were carefully reviewed:

  • Websites: We checked each brand’s official information.
  • Product Packaging: To confirm ingredients and claims.
  • Retailer Listings: To cross-check and fill in missing details.
  • Direct Outreach: We wrote to brands directly and incorporated their responses.

Every piece of data was organized and scored, and now all that research is available on a user-friendly website. Conscious Living makes it simple for fellow eco-conscious folks to explore, compare, and shop smarter.

Most brands featured here already have an eco-conscious mindset, so you may notice fewer mainstream brands. We aim to highlight those truly committed to sustainable and ethical practices.

What is the ConsciousScore and how is it arrived at?

The ConsciousScore is a comprehensive evaluation system designed to help you shop consciously by understanding how well a brand aligns with sustainability, health, safety, and ethical values. We analyze brands across 7 essential areas, each made up of specific, measurable parameters that reflect their overall commitment. Further, these parameters are fine-tuned to cater to what is relevant for a brand’s category.

  • No Nasties (Safety)
    We check if a brand avoids harmful ingredients that you might want to skip, such as:
    • Preservatives
    • Artificial food colors (AFC)
    • Artificial flavors (AFF)
    • Parabens
    • SLS/Sulfates
    • Silicone
    • Ammonia/Peroxide
    • MSG
  • Healthier Choices (Health)
    This category looks at nutrition-friendly features like:
